Dr. Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Amer the President of the Central Informatics and Communication Organisation confirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain focused on the IT and telecommunications sector by building the first communications station via satellite in the Middle East in 1960, and that’s came in his speech in the International Telecommunication Union Council Meeting which was held from 4 -13 July in Geneva, Switzerland. Al Amer said that the communications are part of the Kingdom history, where the people of Bahrain at a time communicate with other regions and countries through the pearl trade. Then the communication with the world came through the telegraph after creating a cable station for the Telegraph.

He added that the Kingdom has become a leading center in the telecommunications market through issuing the Telecommunications Law and establishing the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority in 2002, noting that the technology is major ingredients that contribute to the future economic vision of the Kingdom of Bahrain 2030. Dr. Al Amer explain that in 2005 there was shifting in this sector in the Kingdom, where announced about the fully liberalization of the information and communication technology market, and as a result of this shifting there are 80 listed companies currently offer various main and support services .

He pointed that the Kingdom was and still supports the work of the agencies of the United Nations, which aims to achieve a better life for all. Praising the progress made by the ITU on nearly 150 years to turn the information technology and communications sector to more sophisticated sector.

Al Amer announced that the Kingdom of Bahrain welcome to host the Regional Preparatory Meeting for the (WTDC) in 2013 within the framework of the Kingdom‘s commitment to the work of the ITU.
